A BELGIAN DREAMS TO FLY TO THE MOON THANKS TO DEARMOON PROJECT

Olivier Wérion, born in Tournai et living at Lessines (Belgium, Earth) waits with lust for feedback of his application to the dearMoon Project. This is the first civilian mission to the Moon planned to take place in 2023. The rocket developed by Elon Musk's SpaceX will make a week-long journey to the Moon and back. In 2018, Japanese entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa purchased all the seats aboard this rocket. Wishing to give as many talented individuals as possible the opportunity to go, he announced in March 2021 his plans to choose 8 crew members from across the world.

This is a unique occasion to make Oliver’s dreams a reality! He could enjoy the feeling of zero gravity while getting around the Earth’s satellite, the Moon.

Selection about a project

Following steps of the selection, Olivier was asked to promote a project that he feels passionate about and how this moon trip will be able to contribute to society.

Besides his passion for wind sports, sampling craft beers and piloting drones, Olivier also invests his time as Cleanliness Ambassador "Be WaPP". Be WaPP" is an association local to Olivier’s neighborhood, which improves public cleanliness by developing initiatives aimed to reduce litter and illegal dumping. Litter collection equipment (clamp, gloves, sorting bags) is made available by "Be WaPP" to its ambassadors, who uphold the code of conduct and responsibilities concerning the final destination of the collected waste.

Introducing Plogging: Useful running for the body, Soul and Planet

Plogging is a combination of jogging with picking up litter. Whether along or in a group – Olivier picks up litter left on the sides of the roads, country lanes and the woods. It was in 2017 that he created his team "Magritte", named after his adopted city and birthplace of the Belgian surrealist artist.

Fast forward, Olivier’s Plogging team over the last three years has made a lasting impact in his community. Imagine not seeing any garbage along the sidewalks when walking to school or work. Imagine not seeing any trash when enjoying a walk in the woods. The neighborhood is the extension of one’s own yard. People should take care of their community just how they take care of our home.

Olivier explains “It is essential to keep a positive vision and congratulate my teammates for the visible results of cleanliness as a result of our collective Plogging effort. Plogging is a simple, yet impactful way to get rid of trash. We often receive warm compliments and appreciation during the pick-ups, which is very motivating. Their efforts of properly disposing and sorting waste – not only prevents negative impact on local ecosystems, but also sets a great example of ways people can collaborate and contribute to maintaining a better planet for life.
